As of today, New Yorkers are officially able to get married remotely over video conference. That's according to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's aide Melissa DeRosa, who announced the good news at a Saturday press conference.
"We are today signing an executive order allowing people to get their marriage licenses remotely, and also allowing clerks to perform ceremonies over video," explained DeRosa around the 48:30 minute mark of the conference stream. "So if that's an avenue people want to go down, it will be available to them."
Cuomo, who has been criticized for his delayed response to the coronavirus pandemic, then chimed in after initially wondering aloud why his administration hadn't thought about marriage bureaus.
"Video marriage ceremonies," he said, in apparent disbelief. "There's now no excuse when the question comes up for marriage. No excuse."
Cuomo went on to endorse one specific video-conference tool: Zoom.
"You can do it by Zoom," he said laughing. "It's yes or no."
Cuomo, for his part, is reportedly single.
